History of Hazrat Abbas (A.S.)

Hazrat Abbas was born at Medina on 4th Shabaan 26 A.H.(645 A.D.). When the news of his birth reached Hazrat Ali, he prostrated himself on the ground as a token of his humble thanks to God. Imam Hussain took the baby in his arms and recited the Azan and Eqamat (Calls for Prayers) in his right and left ears respectively. Then the new born baby opened his eyes to see the beloved face of Imam Hussain. On the seventh day of his birth the ceremony of Aqeeqa (which is one of the emphasised Sunnats) was performed and Hazrat Ali named the child 'Abbas'.

A similar incident took place at the time of the birth of Hazrat Ali. He only opened his eyes when the Holy Prophet took him in his arms. Name: al-Abbas (a.s.) Title: Alamdar-e-lashkar-e-Hussain (as.), Qamar bani Hashim Agnomen: Abul Fazl Father: Imam Ali Amir al-Muminin (a.s.) Mother: Fatima bint-e-Huzzam ibn-e-Khalid (a.s.) Birth: 4th Shabaan 26 AH. Death: Martyred in Karbala (Iraq) at the age of 36, on Friday, 10th Muharram 61 AH and buried there.

  • Qamar-e-Bani Hashim (Moon of the Hashim Clan) – For his unmatched beauty, dignity, and presence.
  • Abal Fazl (Father of Virtues) – Symbolizing his noble character and countless virtues.
  • Bab-ul-Hawaij (The Door to Fulfilling Needs) – Known for interceding in the fulfillment of believers’ prayers.
  • Alamdar-e-Karbala (Standard Bearer of Karbala) – The flag bearer of Imam Hussain’s (A.S.) army.
  • Saqqa-e-Shohda (Water Carrier of the Martyrs) – For his mission to bring water to the thirsty in Karbala.
  • Shuja-e-Bani Hashim (The Brave of Bani Hashim) – Renowned for his unmatched courage and valor.
  • Hami-ul-Wilayah (Protector of Imamat) – Defending and supporting Imam Hussain (A.S.) until his last breath.
  • Sardar-e-Lashkar-e-Imam Hussain (A.S.) (Commander of Imam Hussain’s Army) – Leader and guardian of the army in Karbala.
  • Fida-e-Imam Hussain (A.S.) (Sacrificer for Imam Hussain) – His life was devoted to protecting his brother and Imam.
  • Ameer-ul-Wafa (The Prince of Loyalty) – For his unshakable faithfulness to Imam Hussain (A.S.)
  • Father – Hazrat ali ibne abi talib (a.s)
  • Mother – Janabe fatima binte hizam ( also known as Ummul Banin)
  • Wife – Janabe lubaba d/o j. Abdullah s/o j.abbas s/o j. Abdul Muttalib.


When angel gabrail( jibrail )inform prophet mohammad (s.a) Janabe Fatima and Hazrat Ali (a.s) what would happen to his grandson Imam Hussain at Karbala all three were saddened by this, than j. Fatima and Hazrat Ali ( a.s) wished for a son, to help Imam Hussain in Karbala.


It was the 4th Shabaan in 26 th a.h, in the holy city Madina, Qambar ( the faithful servant of Imam Ali a.s.) came running to prophet Mosque and looked among the worshipper for Imam Ali and said almighty bssed you with another son. Happiness could be seen I the eyes of Imam Ali (a.s) , he said I will name my son Abbas.


Hazrat Abbbas (a.s) did not open his eyes after his birth then Imam Ali (a.s) called Hussain , once Imam Hussain (a.s) took Hazrat Abbas(a.s.) in his hands, he opened his eyes and smile.


Hazrat Abbas (a.s) grewup under the guidance of Imam Ali (a.s) for 14 years ,and 10 years of Imam Hasan Mujtaba (a.s) and 10 years under Imam Hussain (a.s) He also remained under guidance of Janabe Zainab and Janabe Kulsum.


His mother(janabe Ummul Banin) taught him never think Hussain as your brother but your master( aqa) and sisters as your princes.


This was the teaching of his mother that he never looked at the face of your princes and never put your words before Imam Hussain (a.s)
